SCOUTING FOR FOOD

For a smooth running food collection program, remember these tips:

• Ensure to coordinate with your local Food Bank for drop off.
• Have patrol leaders call to remind scouts the night before distribution and collection.
• Assemble all scouts and adults at 8:45am to receive final instructions before distributing and collecting bags.
• On a city map, mark out what area your unit/ individuals will cover.
• All scouts wear uniforms when distributing Door Hangers and collecting bags.
• Scouts stay in buddy teams.
• Begin distribution and collection after 10:00am, not earlier.
• Place Door Hanger on front door - do not knock, but if the resident is outside or greets you, explain the program.
• Before the collection date, post reminder signs at entrances to main neighborhoods and at key intersections.
• It takes more time to distribute hangers than to collect bags, so one collection team can cover two distribution team areas.
• Only collect visible bags - do not knock or ask for bags.
• Have a couple of 'Clean Up' teams to cover the entire area after the collection teams have completed. These Clean Up teams drive the area looking for any missed bags and signs to ensure complete coverage.

EVERY YEAR THE NEED FOR FOOD SEEMS TO INCREASE AND THIS YEAR IS NO DIFFERENT. THE NEED SEEMS TO GET GREATER EACH YEAR AND THE SCOUTS IN THE NORTHERN LIGHTS COUNCIL, VOYAGEUR TRAILS DISTRICT STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND DELIVER DOOR HANGERS DOOR TO DOOR AND THEN COME A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER TO PICK UP THE FOOD. THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO TEACH OUR YOUTH TO SERVE OTHERS IN NEED. WE NEED EVERY UNIT AND SCOUT POSSIBLE TO MAKE THIS A SUCCESS, SO START PLANNING NOW AND GETTING PEOPLE EXCITED ABOUT SCOUTING FOR FOOD. NEW THIS YEAR IS SCOUTS WILL BE DISTRIBUTING DOOR HANGERS INSTEAD OF SCOUTING FOR FOOD BAGS. DOOR HANGERS WILL BE HANDED OUT AT THE MARCH 1ST ROUNDTABLE IN THIEF RIVER FALLS
