Council Information
Since 1910, the Boy Scouts of America has provided a comprehensive youth development program for communities across America. The Northern Lights Council is chartered by the National Council, Boy Scouts of America to administer programs of the Boy Scouts of America throughout the State of North Dakota, 18 counties in northwestern Minnesota and 2 counties each in South Dakota and Montana. Scouting in our territory dates back to the 1920’s. The Northern Lights Council was incorporated in 1974 as a result of a merger of four Boy Scout Councils. The Great Plains Council, Lake Agassiz Council, Missouri Valley and Red River Valley Council consolidated into one, the Northern Lights Council.
Today, the Northern Lights Council delivers Scouting programs that develop character, citizenship, fitness, and leadership skills to more than 16,400 youth and 5,200 adult volunteers.
